How did Awaba's timber and railway past shape its homes?
Timber workers were among the first settlers, and in 1885 Awaba became both a timber depot and a railway construction depot, with a large sawmill. The Crown subdivision's first plan was approved in 1891, the post office opened in 1889, and homes grew up scattered over a wide area around the railway contractors' needs.
The Awaba State Coal Mine opened in 1948, the year a water supply arrived, and a branch line to the Wangi power station ran from 1954. Today 97.9% of occupied homes are separate houses on the 2021 count. Walls get a house wash with cleaning solution, and roofs a roof soft wash.
