Broadmeadow started out as part of the 648 hectare Newcastle Pasturage Reserve and grew around the railways and the road to the western suburbs in the 1880s. A marshalling yard opened between Adamstown and Broadmeadow stations in 1938, and the locality holds the Newcastle Regional Showground, the Entertainment Centre, the racecourse and the Nineways intersection, so the housing is only part of the picture.
