Adamstown is named after Thomas Adam, who bought a 54 acre grant of Crown land, and it had a council of its own from 1886 until it was folded into Greater Newcastle in 1938. The Fernleigh Track, a rail trail of about 15.5 km, starts here and runs south to Belmont.
