The forest is Permian, made of the same trees that formed the nearby coal seams, and it matters to both geological and Aboriginal history. The missionary L.E. Threlkeld first recorded it in 1834, and the Reverend W.B. Clarke visited in 1842 and wrote one of the earliest serious geological papers to come out of Australia about it.
