Charlestown began with the Waratah Coal Company's first shaft, sunk in 1873, and its first settlers were miners from the pit, which closed in 1961. The first subdivision was surveyed in 1876, and Ida, Pearson, Milson and Frederick streets were laid out on it; the town had its first water main in 1927 and sewerage in 1959. Shops cluster along the Pacific Highway around Charlestown Square.

Houses make up three quarters of the suburb, with townhouses or semi-detached homes at 14.9% and flats at 8.9%.
