Holgate is the western side of the old Matcham Estate, bounded by Tumbi Umbi to the north, Lisarow to the west and Erina to the south. The first buyers in the Holgate area were Captain and Mrs Heyne, who came here on their honeymoon in 1908 and settled for good in 1921. Residents won a telephone office in 1924, and the name, put forward by Mrs Pollard, came from a town near York in England.

It is still semi-rural, with Firescreek Winery, the Matcham Valley Pony Club and Katandra Reserve, whose name is an Aboriginal word meaning 'Song of Birds'. Homes are big: in 2021, 99.3% of occupied dwellings were separate houses, 78.1% had four or more bedrooms and the average was 4.3 bedrooms.
