What does the national park edge mean for Kariong roofs?

Kariong began as a village of about fifteen families, most of them working at the Mount Penang training school that opened in 1911. It was called Kendall Heights, then Penang Mountain, before the name Kariong, meaning meeting place, was assigned in about 1947. Its boundaries now take in a considerable section of Brisbane Water National Park to the south, as well as the Mount Penang Parklands.

Homes here are mostly separate and roomy: 91.9% of occupied dwellings were separate houses in 2021, with 3.6 bedrooms on average. Near the bush, gutters fill with leaves, and roof tile maker Monier says damp, dirty patches of roofing are exactly where moss and lichen get started. Monier also warns against pressure washers on tiles, so a roof soft wash is used instead, while concrete or paved driveways get driveway cleaning at a pressure the surface can take.
