The suburb is named after Mary Hannell. For a long time it was counted as an industrial suburb, and in recent years many of its older dwellings have been redeveloped; it is now described as quiet and leafy, beside the Throsby Waters Cycleway and Islington Park. Separate houses were 62.6% of its homes in 2021, and semi-detached, terrace or townhouse dwellings 29.1%.
