What do Speers Point's lakefront homes need?

The suburb is bounded by Cockle Creek to the west, Seventh Street to the north, Fairfax Road to the east and the lake to the south. William Brooks opened the Lochend Colliery here in 1843, and the name comes from William Speer, a wealthy Sydney businessman who settled in 1870 on the point of land running into the lake.

The first subdivision came in 1902. The 1989 Newcastle earthquake, centred on neighbouring Boolaroo, did substantial damage to the town, and the nearby Cockle Creek Smelter worked from 1896 until 2003.

In 2021, 80.4% of homes were separate houses and 16.3% were townhouses or semi-detached. Walls by the water get a wash with cleaning solution at low pressure, and roofs a soft wash; the NSW EPA requires runoff from washing to stay out of stormwater drains, which carry it untreated into the lake.
