The West Wallsend Coal Company was formed in 1885 and took up 2,972 acres around the present township; its private railway carried coal to Cockle Creek. Caledonian Collieries bought it in 1895, and the mine closed in 1923 after 35 years. The last passenger train ran in 1930.
