The Awabakal name for the area, Ngorrionba, means where the emu breeds, and the suburb is named for John Jewell, who led hunting parties in Jewells Swamp. The swamp and Jewells Beach were used for commando training in World War II. The land was subdivided in the 1920s but not developed until the 1970s; the school opened in 1977 and the shopping centre in 1982.
