George Peat started a ferry across the Hawkesbury from Mooney Mooney Point in 1844, and vehicle ferries ran until the Peats Ferry Road Bridge opened in 1945; timber piles from the old ferry docks still stand on the foreshore. The suburb takes in Peat Island and Spectacle Island, meets the river along a rocky foreshore, and has oyster farms and depuration depots in its south.
