From 1862 to 1913 the Rock Davis shipyard here turned out more than 120 wooden-hulled vessels, among them the Sydney Harbour ferry Vaucluse, and Davis named the place after Blackwall in London, another shipbuilding centre. The suburb still has a boat ramp, and the part east of Kitchener Park is known locally as Orange Grove.

Kitchener Reserve keeps a block of bushland with walking trails up to the views from Blackwall Mountain, so some homes have bush on one side and Brisbane Water on the other.
